GROSSMITH, John.

Government upon First Principles, Proved and Illustrated Analogically ...

London, Piper, Stephenson & Spence and Judd & Glass, 1860. 8vo, pp. xii, 483, [1] blank + errata slip; initial and final few leaves lightly toned and a few spots to the title, else a fine, clean copy in the original publisher’s grained cloth, spine lettered gilt, spine slightly bumped at extremities. First edition. In the present work, Grossmith demolishes the belief that poverty, ignorance and an unjust society are philosophically ‘good’ or politically wise. He discusses political economy, government legislation and taxation policies, examining Malthus on poverty, Adam Smith, and John Locke.‘Excessive riches among the few is an encumbrance, resulting rather in misery than in happiness amongst its possessors; while miseries result also from the want of sufficient among the many; so that the many poor and the rich few are both and all rendered miserable by greedy legislation’ (p. 6).We were unable to find out anything about Grossmith; this would appear to be his sole work.
