First complete edition. Marsy’s Analyse de Bayle was first published in 1755, only to be condemned by the parlement for its exposition of ‘irreligious’ views, and earning its author a stay in the Bastille. However, Bayle’s writing proved too resonant with the the contemporary intellectual climate to be ignored for long, gaining a new exponent in the shape of Jean-Baptiste-René Robinet, who arranged for Marsy’s Analyse to be reprinted together with his own four-volume continuation of the work (including an account of Bayle’s life). ‘Les quatre derniers volumes offrent surtout un extrait plutôt qu’une analyse; c’est le travail d’un copiste servile qui prend dans un livre tout ce qu’on lui a marqué, c’est-à-dire les sections les moins favorables à la religion et aux moeurs’ (Quérard V, p. 565).
