The Finishing Stroke: or, Mr Ruddiman self-condemned; being a reply to Mr Ruddiman's answer to (only) Mr Logan's First Treatise on Government.

Fleming, 1748. 1 vol (of 2), 8vo, pp. 169, [1] blank; slightly browned, as usual, else a good copy in contemporary calf, some chipping to the covers, joints cracked with some cords loose, spine decorated gilt in compartments with morocco label, lettered gilt, corners slightly bumped; with the author’s presentation inscription to the front fly-leaf (‘The first part of the reply to Mr Ruddiman is gifted by the author to Mr John Clark of Penny-Cook Baronet, one of the barons of His Majestie’s Exchequer in North Britain’). Rare first edition. Following the publication of Logan’s pro-Hanoverian Treatise on Government, Ruddiman’s Answer provided a swift Jacobite reply that cited examples of historical precedent to support the Stuarts’ claims of dynastic primacy. The present work contains Logan’s virulent response to those claims, subjecting Ruddiman’s arguments to a remorselessly thorough examination, and exposing logical non sequiturs in a tone of thinly-veiled mockery: ‘You give us a Paragraph as full of Inconsistencies, as an Egg is full of Meat’ (p. 10). Provenance: Sir John Clerk of Penicuik (1684–1755) was a Scottish advocate and antiquarian, whose house frequently served as a meeting place for Edinburgh’s cultivated society. Clerk also took an active interest in political matters (he was a commissioner responsible for the implementation of the 1707 Act of Union) and mentioned Ruddiman and Logan’s dispute in his Memoirs (p. 255).ESTC locates 5 copies.
