Dentu, 1858. 8vo, pp. xxxv, [1] blank; some foxing, more so to the initial leaves, bound in half-cloth and marbled boards, boards scuffed, spine lettered gilt; with the ownership inscription of the author’s son to the front pastedown (‘Souvenir de mon père, donné à Lausanne le 12 octobre 1894’), with publisher’s advertisment attached to the front fly-leaf for the third edition of Éléments d’économie pure; pencil annotation to the fly-leaf (‘relié par mon père’). Rare first edition of Walras’ first published work. The result of a youthful flirtation with literature, the present work was written while Walras was still officially an engineering student at the ‘École des Mines’. The reading public appear to have remained entirely unmoved by Walras’ literary endeavours; Walras Senior, similarly unimpressed, was nevertheless not unsympathetic to his son’s concern for social issues (outlined in part in the work’s introduction), encouraging him to abandon literature in favour of the social sciences.Walker II, 2.We have located copies at Harvard and the British Library only.
