[MACQUEEN, Daniel].
Letters on Mr. Hume's History of Great Britain.
Edinburgh, A. Kincaid and A. Donaldson, 1756. 8vo, pp. [4], 328; a good copy in contemporary sprinkled calf, double gilt-rule border to covers, spine ruled gilt in compartments, red morocco label to the spine, short crack to the head of the upper joint, red sprinkled edges, ownership inscription to the front pastdedown; an excellent copy. First edition. This is the earliest criticism of Hume’s History listed by Jessop, who records that Hume made changes in the second edition on the basis of it. Minister of the Old Kirk in Edinburgh, MacQueen had taken umbrage at Hume’s criticism of Protestant fanaticism during the English Civil War: the present work contains a spirited defence of Protestant honour, then a wider attack on Hume’s atheistical tendencies.Chuo III, 156; Jessop, p. 49-50; Norton & Norton, The David Hume Library, 657A.
