SAY, Jean-Baptiste.

Traité d'Économie politique, ou simple exposition de la manière dont se forment, se distribuent et se consomment les richesses.

Paris, Déterville, 1803. Two vols, 8vo, pp. [4], xlvi, 527, [1]; [iv], 572; some occasional light spotting, but a very good copy, attractively bound in full contemporary tree calf, flat spines ruled and decorated gilt in compartments, contrasting lettering- and numbering-pieces, blue silk markers, yellow edges, upper joint of volume two slightly cracked at head but still firm; a very desirable copy. First edition. Although initially suppressed by Napoleon on publication, this work eventually ran to 32 editions and was, apart from The Wealth of Nations, the most popular economic text of the first half of the nineteenth century. Though Say (1767–1832) ranks with Sismondi and Cournot in the originality of his contributions to economic theory, his reputation has suffered from his being considered primarily an exponent of Adam Smith. Schumpeter, who calls his work ‘the most important of the links in the chain that leads from Cantillon and Turgot to Walras’, offers convincing arguments that Say does indeed belong to the French tradition.Carpenter XXXIII (1); Einaudi 5118; En Français dans le Texte 207; Goldsmiths’ 18616; Kress B.4729; Mattioli 3236; Schumpeter, pp. 492–3.
