First edition, published as part of the Bibliothek der Gesammten Handelswissenschaften. Hans von Mangoldt (1824–1868) was the leading figure of the German classical school of economists. He ‘ranks among those pioneers in Germany, like von Thünen, von Buquoy, von Hermann, Gossen and Launhardt, who applied formal analysis to explain economic phenomena’ (The New Palgrave III, 299). Schumpeter names him ‘among the century’s most significant figures in our field’. The Volkswirtschaftslehre is second in importance only to the Grundriss der Volkswirtschaftslehre written in 1863. It contains contributions to his allocation theory, which ‘was as pioneering as his analysis of coalitions on the labour market’ (ibid.).Menger, col. 86; Roscher, p. 1039.
