There were at least seven different issues with varying paginations issued in 1707; this is the final one listed by Jacqueline Hecht in the INED bibliography of Boisguilbert. A supplement of 12 pages is sometimes found at the end of volume II, but it is not present here.Boisguilbert (1646–1714) is largely remembered as the economist whom Marx linked with Petty as marking the start of classical political economy. Haney calls him ‘the first economic theorist of note to be produced by France’ (History of economic thought, p. 173), and Schumpeter describes him as ‘theoretically articulate – perhaps more so than any other writer before Cantillon’ (History of economic analysis, p. 215). ‘His marriage to a rich heiress in 1677 allowed him to pursue profitable activities in trade and agriculture for several years and enter the magistrature of Normandy. Such experiences brought home to him the deteriorating French economic position and the need to reverse this through fiscal and economic reform’ (The New Palgrave I, p. 259). In Le Détail de la France, he laid bare the economic defects in the system, attacking Colbert for having put agriculture on one side, and having shackled the trade of corn. His remedy comprised tax reform, an improved distribution system, and the abolition of export duties on grain.Provenance: This copy contains the bookplates (or remnants thereof) of Jacques-Bernard Durey de Noinville (1683–1768, see DBF XII 759), sometime maître des requêtes du roi and author of Dissertation sur les bibliothèques (1758) and Table alphabétique des dictionnaires en toutes sortes de sciences et d’arts (1758), among other works; Jean François de Los-Rios (1728–1820), the Lyons bookseller; and Jean-Baptiste Marduel, priest at St. Nizier, Lyons.
