FAVIER, Louis Joseph.

Paris, Bachelier (successor of widow Courcier), 1824. 8vo, pp. [4], 90 + errata leaf + folding table; bound with two related works (see below) in recent quarter calf, spine lettered gilt. First and only edition of the author’s first work. After training at the École des ponts et chaussées and serving as an engineer in the Middle East, Favier (1776–after 1855) returned in 1800 to France and the École for two years, when he was sent to work in the Pas de Calais on the construction of a canal between the Aa and the Liane. His life was thereafter dominated by other engineering projects all over France, with a brief interlude serving in Napoleon’s general staff at Waterloo, before his retirement, aged 70, in 1846.Like his fellow alumnus of the École des ponts et chaussées, Jules Dupuit (1804–1866), Favier uses mathematical formulae in his examination, specifically in his argument that the three essentials when considering a project should be its utility, expense and longevity. His method is summarized on the title thus: ‘Unité de but, simplicité et harmonie des organes; telles sont les conditions essentielles de tout bon système’. It would appear that Favier was overlooked by Schumpeter in his analysis of public utilities, as any French works mentioned are over 60 years later than the present work (cf. Schumpeter, p. 948f).Favier wrote two other works: on the laws of movement and traction in their relevance to mountain roads (‘excellent ouvrage’ – DBF) and some observations on a levelling project carried out on the Isthmus of Suez early in his career.OCLC locates copies at the Library of Congress and Harvard Business School only. Pp. [2], 221, [1] blank. Not in OCLC.LEPASQUIER, Aug. Pp. [4], 59, [1] blank; lower corner of first and last leaf torn away. Not in OCLC.
