Milborne’) on the front free endpaper; a fine, crisp copy in contemporary panelled calf, spine gilt in compartments, morocco label; a couple of minor scrapes, joints and corners restored; engraved bookplate of Thomas Swinnerton; book-label of Viscount Mersey. First edition of Madox’s massive History, apparently presented by the author to Charles Milbourn, who is named among the subscribers.Wholly based upon original sources, this work ‘discusses almost all the aspects of medieval financial administration in England, and as an appendix … Madox printed for the first time … the famous text usually known as the Dialogus de Scaccario … wherein Richard fitz Neal, Bishop of London, and Treasurer in the reign of Henry II, explained the detailed working of the royal exchequer in his day …’ Madox not only provided a text of the Dialogus that was not superseded for two centuries, but he was ‘responsible for assigning the book to its true author’ (previously thought to be Gervase of Tilbury).
