HAYES, Richard.

An estimate of places for life: shewing how many years purchase a place for life is worth. ... The whole being calculated upon the chances of the probabilities of lives in general ... to which is prefix'd, an account of places which are in the disposal of the Lord Mayor ...

London, W. Meadows, 1728. 8vo, pp. [4], 263; an excellent, fresh copy bound in eighteenth century English calf, spine decorated gilt in compartments, with a gilt morocco label to spine, corners a little rubbed; with the engraved armorial bookplate of the Macclesfield library, dated 1860, and an early shelf number on the front pastedown, with the Macclesfield armorial stamp to the first three leaves. First edition. Hayes states in his preface that he hopes this work would be “of general service to those who are endeavouring to obtain places”. This practical manual not only calculates the value of an annuity at nine, ten, eleven, and twelve percent over the lifetime of the holder (up to age 64) and calculates through probabilities the number of years the holder must live in order to realise the original purchase price in returns, but it also gives “an account of the offices, not only of those belonging to the City of London, but also of others which are to obtained only by favour.”Goldsmiths’ 6617; Hanson 3879; Kress S.1695; ESTC locates 14 copies, evenly distributed between North America (seven copies) and the United Kingdom and Ireland (also seven copies).
