LUEDER, August Ferdinand.

Ueber Nationalindustrie und Staatswirthschaft. Nach Adam Smith bearbeitet ... Erster [– Dritter und letzter] Theil.

Berlin, Heinrich Frölich, 1800–4. Three vols, 8vo, pp. xxxii, 462, [1] errata, [1] blank; viii, 623, [1] errata; viii, 518, [521]–783, [1] errata (complete); old shelfmarks to the title of each volume, else a clean and bright copy in recent calf-backed boards, spines ruled and direct lettered and numbered gilt. First edition of Lueder’s major work. Together with Sartorius and Kraus, Lueder (1760–1819) was one of the first writers in Germany to renounce mercantilism. In the present work, he elaborated Adam Smith’s ideas, illustrating his arguments with numerous examples from history and ethnography. He deviated from Smith in his emphasis of the subjective nature of value, laying more stress on the significance of intellectual and moral factors in the economic development of a nation. Overlooking Hume’s contribution, Lueder claimed to have been the first to propose that the influence of industry on intellectual and moral culture be investigated in a political or historical study.Goldsmiths’ 17851; Humpert 7672; Kress B.4225; Menger, col. 85; Tribe 72; not in Einaudi.
