WILCKE, Christian Heinrich.

Frankfurt and Leipzig, August Lebrecht Stettin, 1765. Two parts in one vol., small 4to, pp. [2], [viii], [3]–46, [1] errata, [1] note to the binder, 567, [1] blank + 8 folding engraved plates; 216 + 2 folding tables; library stamps to the blank verso of the title and the lower blank margin of p. 48 in the first part; offsetting throughout, with some spotting, but still a good copy in recent boards, paper label to spine. Rare first and only edition of an early work on surveying and cartometry, with an emphasis on the application of theoretical mathematics to practical uses. In it, Wilcke (d. 1776) presents a comprehensive treatment of arithmetic, practical geometry, the measurement of boundaries, and the preparation of maps, before analysing the principal problems of boundaries in general, the various reasons for surveying and how to go about it. We were able to locate only one other work by Wilcke, on book piracy and copyright: Der gerechtfertigte Nachdrucker, oder, Johann Thomas von Trattners … erwiesene Rechtmässigkeit (1774).Not in Goldsmiths’, Humpert or Kress; OCLC and RLIN only locate the Huntington copy, which lacks the second part; KVK lists four copies, at Leipzig, Tübingen, Halle, and Weimar.
