RAU, Karl Heinrich.
Die landwirthschaftlichen Geräthe der Londoner Ausstellung im Jahre 1851. Amtlicher Bericht mit Zusätzen und Abbildungen ...
Berlin, Decker, 1853. Tall 8vo, pp. iv, [1] contents, [1] blank, 164; with numerous engravings in the text; first two leavs lightly foxed, with occasional spotting elsewhere; a good copy, bound without the two pages of advertisements called for by OCLC, in contemporary cloth-backed marbled boards, corner of upper board a little torn, spine lettered gilt. First separate edition of a report on the agricultural machinery on display at the Great Exhibition, prepared by the German follower of Adam Smith, Karl Heinrich Rau (1792–1870). Rau was a member of the commission sent to the Exhibition by the government of Baden on both its behalf and on behalf of a number of other member states of the Zollverein. The report was first issued as part of the Amtlicher Bericht über die Industrie-Ausstellung aller Völker in London im Jahre 1851, and is reprinted here with additional material, including illustrations. The idea of an international exhibition was first proposed by Prince Albert in 1849; it was opposed by many influential figures at almost every stage, but was finally brought to fruition. Thousands of exhibits were divided into thirty classes and classified under four main heads: raw materials, machinery, manufactures, fine arts. The exhibition was a huge success with over 17,000 exhibitors, of which 7000 were foreign or colonial. The attendance was over six million and the takings over £420,000. ‘The total effect of “The Great Exhibition” was considerable, if incalculable. It is well summed up by R. H. Mottram as symbolising “the solid gains of early Victorian aspiration and achievement”’ (Early Victorian England). See PMM 331.Very rare: OCLC locates the Harvard Business School copy only, to which KVK adds copies at Göttingen and Hanover; not in RLIN.
