BOECKH, Richard.
Die geschichtliche Entwickelung der amtlichen Statistik des Preussischen Staates. Im Auftrage des Directors des Königlichen Statisitischen Bureaus Herrn Dr. Engel dargestellt ... Eine Festgabe für den Internationalen Statisitischen Congress in Berlin.
Berlin, Königliche Geheime Ober-Hofbuchdruckerei (R. Decker), 1863. 4to, pp. [iv], 105, with two folding lithographic tables at the end; text a little browned, title with a few inoffensive brown spots; some contemporary pencil annotation to the text; a good copy in contemporary half-cloth over marbled boards with the binder’s ticket of W. Beil, spine decorated and lettered in gilt; extremities a little rubbed; from the library of the Royal Statistical Bureau in Berlin with their ink stamp to the final blank page. Rare first edition, the archival copy (Frei-Exemplar) of the Royal Statistical Bureau, with two additional tables not found in other copies. This history of statistics in Prussia was published for the private use of the Statistical Bureau and for the participants of the International Statistical Conference in Berlin.‘The Statistische Seminar at the Royal Prussian Statistical Bureau was founded by Ernst Engel and Richard Boeckh in 1862. It played a pioneering role in establishing a methodological apparatus for censuses in Germany and, moreover, for the teaching and organisation of statistics and for population statistics in particular … From this Statistical Seminar emerged eminent population statisticians such as Knapp, L. Brentano, E. Würzburger, and R. R. Kuczynski’ (translated from Ralph-Jürgen Lischke and Harald Michel, Zur Entwicklung der Bevölkerungswissenschaft im deutschsprachigen Raum von den Anfängen bis 1945, in: Statistische Monatsschrift, Berliner Statistik, 3/2001, p. 115).The two folding plates at the end are specimens for census forms, printed from a manuscript. They are not mentioned in any collation in KvK, OCLC, etc, neither are they found in the online facsimile of this work published by the faculty for economic and social history at Cologne University: they must have been printed for a very limited number of copies, for internal use only.NUC locates one copy at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; OCLC locates copies at Keio University, Harvard, and Cornell University.
