Two vols in one, 4to, pp. [iv], 336; [iv], 371, [1] blank; upper corner of p. 215 in vol. I torn away and a small hole (natural paper flaw) to the blank margin of p. 221 in vol. II; the odd mark, but overall a remarkably clean copy in contemporary quarter calf, contrasting gilt lettering-pieces to spine. First edition (second, 1830; third, 1832) of a rare work of legal ethics. It was published as a companion piece to the six-volume Nuovo Prospetto delle Scienze Economiche (1815–17), Gioja’s most important work which had been conceived in order ‘to reduce to a system all that writers have thought, governments sanctioned and people practiced, in public and private economy. In it, the opinions of all Italian and all foreign writers are examined.
