RESSI, Adeodato.

Dell'economia della specie umana.

Pavia, Pietro Bizzoni (heir to Bolzani), 1817–20. Four vols, 8vo, pp. [iv], 301, [1] errata, [2] blank; [3]–368, [1] errata, [1] blank; [3]–362, [1] errata, [1] blank; [3]–538, [2]; some light foxing; a good set, uncut, bound without the half-titles in recent half vellum, gilt lettering- and numbering-pieces to spines. First edition, very rare. Ressi (1768–1822), a follower of Valeriani and, like him, a contributor to the literature of mathematical economics, was a professor at the University of Pavia. In this, his major work, ‘Ressi makes acute observations on the population question in reference to the theory of progression maintained by Malthus. He applies the doctrine concerning population to the problem of charity, maintaining that the growth of population must be checked by severe laws on charity; he would also limit the rate of marriage among the poor … He puts forward sound ideas on international trade, limiting its importance to the general interests of the country, and advocating the widest possible freedom for trade. ‘Ressi makes correct reflections on small and large cultivation, recognising the application of the one and the other system to be dependent on the conditions of place and the nature of the products. He desires that the state should create industries to employ workmen thrown out of work through the use of machinery. He has strong views on finance and the organisation of the taxes. He opposes the single tax, and in the taxation of land and manufactories he would exempt that quota which supplies the physical minimum necessary for life’ (Palgrave).Cossa 6 (23); Kress Italian 832; Menger, col. 717; not in Einaudi or Goldsmiths’; OCLC locates the Berkeley copy only.
