The Dutch mathematician, logician, and philosopher E. W. Beth (1908–1964) went on to publish the comprehensive Foundations of Mathematics in 1959. He was an acquaintance of Quine, but called Carnap his ‘guide’, referring to his ‘solidity and lucidity and … obvious sincerity of purpose’ (Schilpp, The Philosophy of Rudolph Carnap [1963], p. 470).
