FUSTEL DE COULANGES, Numa Denis.

La Cité antique. Étude sur le Culte, le Droit, les Institutions de la Grèce et de Rome.

Paris, Hachette, 1874. 8vo, pp. [iv], 496; with the inscription ‘A Monsieur Deloche, membre de l’Institut, hommage de l’auteur F. C.’ to the half-title; edges lightly browned with some light spotting; contemporary quarter morocco and marbled boards, lightly rubbed, spine lettered gilt. Fifth edition of Fustel de Coulanges’ masterpiece, a work that established some of the fundamental ideas of sociology, inscribed by the author. Fustel de Coulanges (1830–1889) was one of the first to assign a central role to the concept of community in explaining the origin, evolution and transformation of societies: in this he foreshadows the typology of Tönnies. He was also the first to make clear analytical use of the perspective of the sacred in the interpretation of social organization and institutional change: in this he directly influenced Durkheim – who attended his lectures at the Ecole Normale – and, through him, the school of sociologists associated with the Année sociologique.See IESS VI, 43, and Nisbet, pp. 71–3 & 238.
