BENTHAM, Jeremy.

Justice and Codification Petitions: being forms proposed for signature by all persons whose desire it is to see Justice no longer sold, delayed, or denied: and to obtain a possibility of that knowledge of the law, in proportion to the want of which they are subjected to Unjust Punishments, and deprived of the Benefit of their Rights. Drafts for the above proposed petitions ...

London, C. and W. Reynell for Robert Heward, 1829. 8vo, pp. [iii]–xvi, xv, [1] blank, 207, [1] blank, 88, 15, [1] blank, 23, [1] blank, 9, [1] blank, iii, [1] blank; lacks half-title; Edward Strutt’s copy (see below), with his bookplate to the front pastedown; full calf, blind tooled borders, and blind tooling on spine, label and gilt lettering, marbled endpapers; a fine copy. First edition. Bentham’s great interest in codification was intimately connected with the subject matter of the petition in this work and with that of the petition for justice. He believed that only by codification could the reform he desired be carried into effect. ‘When [Daniel] O’Connell received his copy of the Petitions, he at once wrote to his “revered master” for “suggestions, nay commands,” as to what he should do in Parliament. “If you think it is right I will begin with the Despatch Court, that is the first or second day of the Session – then the natural as opposed to technical procedure; at least, a portion on this subejct – then an address to procure a Code. Every day I will have a petition on some one or more law abuse”’ (Atkinson, p. 203f).Provenance: from the library of Edward Strutt, first Baron Belper (1801–1880), student of Lincoln’s Inn and the Inner Temple, Member of Parliament for Derby and, as a philosophical radical, intimate with Bentham, the Mills, and Macaulay. He was an authority on free trade, law reform and education.Chuo J6-1; Everett, p. 539; not in Goldsmiths’.
