BROAD, Charlie Dunbar.
Five Types of Ethical Theory.
London, Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., 1930. 8vo, pp. xxv, [1] blank, 288 + 16-page publisher’scatalogue (dated 1929); a nice clean copy in the original publisher’s cloth, spine lettered gilt, very lightly rubbed, short tear to lower joint. First edition, with chapters on Spinoza, Butler, Hume, Kant, and Sidgwick. C. D. Broad (1887–1971) ‘won a science scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge, and went up there in 1906 … In 1908 he got a first in part i of the natural sciences tripos but, doubting his chances of doing first class work in science, turned to philosophy. That decision was justified in 1910 by his achievement of first class honours, with special distinction in “moral science”. His main teachers were J. M. E. McTaggart, whose notice he later wrote for this Dictionary, and the logician W. E. Johnson. He also had some contact with Bertrand Russell, the philosopher to whom technically he was closest, sharing Russell’s conviction that science is very substantially inconsistent with common sense and more worthy of belief than common sense, and with G. E. Moore. It was the early and largely shared doctrines of these two major philosophers that Broad was to elaborate and to defend, despite Laodicean protestations, throughout his career’ (DNB). After a spell teaching at St Andrews, Broad returned to Cambridge in 1923 as McTaggart’s successor at Trinity College, where he spent the rest of his life and later came into conflict with Wittgenstein and his followers. Although not an admirer of the Austrian’s work, Broad did recognize his genius; at the time of Wittgenstein’s election as professor in 1939, Broad stated ‘To refuse the chair to Wittgenstein would be like refusing Einstein a chair of physics’ (quoted in Monk, p. 415).
