Two parts in one vol., small 4to, pp. [xx, including engravedfrontispiece], 360, [60] index; 328, with three folding engraved plates; with numerous woodcuts and engravings in the text; one gathering browned, a few leaves with marginal traces of worming (10 repaired), occasionally only lightly spotted or browned; a good copy in contemporary vellum over boards, spine lettered in gilt; front joint cracked, but holding; title with contemporary calligraphic initials M A. P. with fleurs-de-lys, in red ink. First edition of a collection of texts by classical writers on surveying, the layout of gardens, agriculture, rural economy, country estates, bridges, canals and rivers. Since Roman times there existed a collection of texts on these matters and on agricultural law, the corpus agrimensorum. Goes, a Dutch jurisconsult and philologist, and director of the Dutch East India Company, based his highly annotated edition on this corpus, adds more sources, and elucidates the practice of surveying with his commentaries. Goes also incorporates Nicolas Rigault’s commmentaries upon classical writers on surveying and agriculture, which had first appeared in Paris in 1614.
