Law, and Longman, Hurst, Rees & Orme, 1807. 12mo, pp. viii, 123, [1] advertisements; with a woodcut depicting London and Rome to the title, and 25 further woodcuts in the text; early ink ownership inscription to the front pastedown; imprint slightly shaved, edges of title browned; contemporary full sheep, rebacked, spine lettered gilt. First published around 1700, James Greenwood’s London Vocabulary, an abridgment of Comenius, was one of the most popular aids for young learners of Latin throughout the eighteenth century, and continued to be published well into the nineteenth on both sides of the Atlantic. ‘Sur-master’ at St Paul’s School, London, Greenwood also wrote An Essay towards a practical English Grammar (1711) and later compiled The Royal English Grammar (1737), both of which were reprinted a number of times.Kennedy 2851; see Alston XVI, nos. 585–605 for the eighteenth-century editions.
