McCULLOCH, John Ramsay.
The Literature of Political Economy: a classified catalogue of select publications in the different departments of that science, with historical, critical, and biographical notices ...
London, Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1845. 8vo, pp. [iii]–xiii, [1] blank, [1] errata, [1] blank, 407, [1] blank; with the inscription ‘James Cook Esq &c. &c. from the Author’ in McCulloch’s distinctive bold hand to the front flyleaf, later crossed out, and Cook’s bookplate to the front pastedown; later in the possession of Vincent Scully (inscription dated 1884 to the verso of the front free endpaper), and the Jesuit Pontifical Faculty at Milltown Park, Dublin, with its stamp to the title and shelfmark to the front pastedown; lightly toned, but a nice copy, bound without the half-title and Longmans catalogue in contemporary full calf, a few marks, marbled edges and endpapers, spine stamped in gilt and blind. First edition of a landmark in the history of the literature of political economy. As well as an economist, McCulloch (1789–1864) was a noted bibliophile: after his death, his library was sold (through Quaritch) to his friend Lord Overstone, whose daughter later bequeathed it to Reading University. Reprinted as recently as 1991, his Literature of Political Economy remains an indispensable tool for bibliographers and students of political economy. The work is divided into the various sections of the field, with a useful author and title index at the end. Each section begins with a general introduction, to be followed by a list of the principal works relating to that aspect of political economy, with notes on the individual works.Goldsmiths’ 34082; Howey 98; Kress C.6656; Mattioli 2327; not in Einaudi.
