[RUEL, Abbé].

Dissertation théologique sur les intérêts de l'argent placé à jour chez les négocians et autres personnes qui le font valoir.

Paris, n. p., 1783. Small 8vo, pp. vi, [7]–117, [1] errata + privilege leaf; early ink authorial attribution to the title; a good copy in contemporary full mottled calf, marbled endpapers, red edges, one corner worn, spine stamped gilt in compartments, morocco lettering-piece, slight worming at foot. First edition; a second followed in 1789. In the present work, Ruel, a former missionary to French Guiana, replies to the encyclical Vix pervenit, issued by Benedict XIV in 1745, which reasserted the scholastic teaching on usury. Ruel regards investments with traders and those wishing to acquire land, property etc. as fair and just, as they are not loans for consumption. Since they are not usurious, he contends, it would be of great benefit to authorize them as of value to trade, industry, capital, labour, and religion.Ruel’s arguments, and those of like-minded clerics such as Laforest, Rulié, Beurrey and Dorlhac, were countered by the Abbé Rougane in Les nouveaux patrons de l’usure réfutés (1789).Barbier I, 1089; not in Goldsmiths’, INED or Kress (but cf. INED 3993 for the second edition).
