MARIANA, Juan de.

De ponderibus et mensuris.

Toledo, Thomas de Guzmán, 1599. [bound with:] —————. De rege et regis institutione libri III … Toledo, Pedro Rodríguez, 1599.Two works in one vol., small 4to, pp. [viii], 192; [viii], 446, [9] index, [1] blank; woodcut device to the title of each work; in De ponderibus: marginal waterstaining to a few leaves, early MS ink notes (cropped) in places; in De rege: inkspots to the title, portion of lower margin of 2E8 torn away, not affecting text, stain to V1 due to old paper repair, with some light offsetting and occasional waterstaining elsewhere; eighteenth-century tree calf, marbled endpapers, red edges, spine ruled gilt, with a gilt morocco lettering-piece. First editions of Mariana’s historical discussion of Greek, Roman, Hebrew and Spanish measures, weights and coins, and the notorious De rege, which contains his well-known, but at the time dangerous justification of tyrannicide, construed by many as a denial of the divine right of kings in that it encouraged the belief that the Jesuits were responsible for the assassination of Henri IV of France. Not surprisingly, the work was banned by the French parliament and all copies sentenced to be burned and is consequently very rare in first edition. De ponderibus and De rege appeared together in later editions, but with the undesirable passages in the latter censored.Mariana (1536–1624) is also remembered for his important history of Spain (1592) and for the fourth of the seven treatises published in Cologne in 1609 (‘De Monetae mutatione’) – one of the earliest formulations of the concept of inflation – which led to the 73-year-old Mariana’s condemnation to life imprisonment, a sentence in fact commuted to a year’s confinement in a Madrid convent. His turbulent life has led the Catholic Encyclopedia to term him ‘one of the most maligned members of the Jesuit order.’ 1st work: Colmeiro 265; Goldsmiths’ 290; Kress 214; Palau 151724; STC Spanish, p. 127; Sommervogel V, 560; not in Einaudi or Matsuda. 2nd work: Palau 151713 (‘uno de los libros más atrevidos que se han publicado’); STC Spanish, p. 127; Sommervogel V, 557 (‘rare’).
