BÜTTNER, Franz.

Dissertatio inauguralis medica de probabilitatibus medicis ...

[Altdorf,] Daniel Meyer, 1722. 8vo, pp. 32; a nice crisp copy in modern boards. First edition. This well-printed doctoral dissertation, on good paper, presented at the Altdorf Lyceum by an author of whom we could find no other publication, treats the uncertainties of medicine. Altdorf, a small town some 5 km from Landshut in Bavaria, had an important university until it was closed down in 1809; the Altdorf medical school attracted students from all over Europe. Page 31 of this work prints a commendatory letter to Büttner from Johann Jacob Baier, a distinguished head of the medical school.Büttner, a native of Frankfurt, writes of the practicalities of diagnosis and therapy. Many medical rules are statements of probability; there will be individual patients where the general rule, for one reason or another, does not apply. Individuals will have an aversion to a particular medicine etc. He deals with undecided matters where various authorities hold divergent opinions and in later sections philosophises, with references to Aristotle, on e.g. the difference between probability and conjecture. This urbane treatise ultimately addresses the statistically inductive basis of much medicine, where probability must represent the basis of clinical care until shown to mislead in particular cases. It is supported by ample citation of established authority. Not in found in Blake or Wellcome.
