Two vols, 8vo, pp. xvi, 468, 16 (publisher’s catalogue of works by the Webbs); viii, 1085, [1], with photographic frontispieces in both volumes, one being a ‘A Snapshot [of Beatrice Webb] by Bernard Shaw’; no 371 of 400 copies, signed by both authors. With a signed, postcard stapled to front free endpaper of volume one, from Sidney Webb to Philip Guadella, dated 27 March, 1929; original quarter cloth and red boards, spine lettered gilt, sunned. First edition, privately printed in a limited edition; the final two volumes of the Webbs’ magnum opus on ‘English Local Government’. The postcard to the historian Philip Guadella, explains that ‘The copy of English Poor Law History prepared for you will be despatched within ten days … with best wishes (unpolitical!), Sidney Webb’. ‘[E]very County and Borough and almost every Poor Law Union obtains some mention’ in the volume, and ‘the story ends as it begins, with the (as yet unsolved) problem presented by the Unemployed’ (publisher’s catalogue). ‘Having completed their trade union studies, the Webbs embarked almost immediately upon research into local government … Intending to examine Victorian local government from the ‘revolution’ of 1834–5 (the new poor law and the Municipal Corporations Act), they were driven to investigate first the early nineteenth century and then the eighteenth century in order to understand later developments. As their material proliferated, the survey exploded. It ran eventually to nine volumes, the last of which was not published until 1929 (a tenth was intended but unwritten)’ (John Davis in the Oxford DNB).
