First edition. Mably (1709–1785) was in the contradictory position of being both a partial adherent and a formidable opponent of the Physiocrats. His criticisms of Le Mercier de la Rivière’s work were published the same year as the Ordre naturel. The Doutes, written in the form of ten letters addressed to the author of the Ephémérides du Citoyen, embodies an attack on landed property, which Mably believed introduced indolence and sloth into the world, creating vices of riches and poverty.
