First edition: ‘These lectures were delivered at the London School of Economics in 1937, and have been revised and extended for publication. They deal with only certain aspects of public finance, to which, although they involve questions of principle, more attention has hitherto been given in public than in academic discussion’ (foreword). A pupil of Marshall’s at Cambridge, D. H. Macgregor (1877–1953) was Drummond Professor of Political Economy at Oxford from 1926–45. He had been editor of the Economic Journal from 1926–34.
