First edition. Merivale (1806–1874) was a prodigy who, by the age of 31, had had a flourishing career at the Bar, as well as having been appointed Drummond Professor of Political Economy at Oxford. Lord Lytton (1803–1873) called Merivale ‘one of the most remarkable men he ever met’ and compared his intellectual ‘massiveness’ to that of Macauley.Among the thirteen studies in the present collection are some previously published, some ‘altered from their original shape, or nearly rewritten’ (p. v) and some published for the first time. Divided into three sections (‘Precursors of the French Revolution’, ‘Studies from history of the seventeenth century’, ‘Leisure hours of a tourist’), they include pieces on Catherine the Great, Pascal Paoli, Voltaire, Rousseau, and Goethe.
