An interesting Sammelband containing five classics of dialectical materialism, all with first printings or editions of prefaces by Engels.I. This is the third printing of the last edition of the Manifesto to appear during Engels’ lifetime, the so-called ‘sixth authorized German edition’. This edition was first printed and published in London as volume XXXIII of the Sozialdemokratische Bibliothek, as the ‘Vierte autorisirte deutsche Ausgabe’. It was destined for Germany after Bismarck’s legislation against the socialists (Sozialistengesetze) had been abolished in October 1890. All later Berlin editions (another appeared in 1891, the ‘fifth authorized German edition’) up to 1909 were printed from stereotypes of this original London typesetting.Our edition reprints Marx’s and Engels’ 1872 preface, Engels’ 1883 preface written just after Marx’s death, and Engels’ preface to the London 1890 edition.II. This is the third separate publication of Wage-Labour and Capital, first published, in instalments, in the Neue Rheinische Zeitung in 1849. This first publication of Marx’s 1847 lectures remained unfinished due to the suspension of the paper. In 1880 and 1881 the text was republished, without Marx’s knowledge, in Breslau. The first ‘official’ edition, with a short prefatory note by Engels, appeared in Switzerland in 1884. This 1891 edition was revised by Engels and contains a substantial preface by him, in which he explains how Marx’s later views differed from his 1847 teachings, the role of the concept and factor ‘labour’ in classical economic theory, and what difference it makes to substitute it with ‘labour-force’ (Arbeitskraft).III. The Civil War in France was first published in English in 1871. This is the third German edition, translated by Engels, and with a long introduction by him. The first German edition had appeared in two consecutive issues of the Volksstaat (1871); it was re-issued five years later. Hal Draper, in The Marx-Engels Register (M143) calls this the ‘definitive’ edition; it further contains the two addresses by Marx on the Franco-Prussian War.IV. First edition in book form of a series of three articles from the Neue Rheinische Zeitung Revue (1850), prefaced and edited by Engels, who added a fourth part, which is based on an article that had appeared in two consecutive issues of the same journal in 1851.V. Third edition of this exemplary historical study. The text was first printed in New York in 1852, in Weydemeyer’s second issue of Die Revolution. It appeared with a preface by Marx in Hamburg (same publisher) in 1869. This edition contains a new two-page preface by Engels; Marx’s preface is retained.I.
