First edition: Pownall, English colonial administrator and Governor of Massachusetts, was author of a critical Letter to Adam Smith discussing his Wealth of Nations (1776). In the present work, Pownall argues against the political autonomy arrogated by the East India Company and calls for direct control by the Crown.
