BRENTANO, Lujo.
Die deutschen Getreidezölle. Eine Denkschrift ...
Stuttgart & Berlin, J. G. Cotta’s successors, 1910. 4to, pp. 67, [1] imprint; fine in contemporary half cloth. First edition of Brentano’s (1844–1931) analysis of German grain tariffs in the nineteenth century, dedicated to Wilhelm Roscher. From 1871, Brentano taught political economy as professor in Berlin, Breslau, Strasbourg, Vienna, Leipzig and Munich. A decisive point for his later career was his participation in the Statistical Seminar connected with the Prussian Statistical Office, under the direction of Ernst Engel. From Engel he obtained a strong interest in the social conditions of the working classes. Further fields of interest were Malthus’s theory of population development, the theory of value, and the German corn tariffs, which he opposed. A second edition of this work was published in 1911.
