First edition; the work was reissued in 1827, with the author’s real name in the title, as An Examination of opinions maintained in the ‘Essay on the Principles of Population’, by Malthus; and in the ‘Elements of Political Economy’, by Ricardo; with some remarks in reply to Sir James Graham’s ‘Address to the Landowners’ (Goldsmiths’ 25193).Ross’s work is a detailed commentary, passage by passage, on the Essay. It is singled out by Malthus’s modern biographer among the most notable of the many anti-Malthusian (and in this case correspondingly pro-Ricardian) invectives of the period, often taking a violent and personal approach in reaction to the alleged inhumanity and impiety of Malthus’s ideas on procreation, and the radicalism of his proposals on poor relief (see Patricia James, Population Malthus: his life and times, pp. 387–8).Goldsmiths’ 24436; Kress C.1491; not in Einaudi or Mattioli.
