MILL, John Stuart.

Inaugural Address delivered to the University of St. Andrews Feb. 1st 1867 ... People's edition.

London, Longmans, Green, Reader, and Dyer, 1867. Small 8vo, pp. 48, 32 (publisher’s advertisements); a little dust-soiling and very occasional spotting; a good copy, uncut in the original publisher’s cloth, upper board lettered gilt, spine split and chipped, with loss of c.1cm at head. An early, popular edition of Mill’s address given at his installation as Lord Rector of the University of St Andrews in 1867; the first edition had also been published by Longmans the same year. ‘Limiting his remarks to the cultural aspects of education, [Mill] advocates the view that both the classics and the sciences should be taught; extols the virtues to be derived from linguistic pursuits and a first-hand knowledge of the great Greek and Roman writers; defends the values to be found in scientific subjects such as mathematics, logic, and psychology; argues for the importance of training in esthetic subjects; and urges that the university become a place for free speculation rather than of dogmatic indoctrination or of too intense specialization in any one field’ (MacMinn et al.). Mill had been elected to the post in 1865, but was too much involved in parliamentary politics to take office immediately. The speech lasted three hours, but was well received, bringing forth cheers from the Divinity students when he touched upon free thought.See MacMinn, Hainds & McCrimmon, p. 98.
