Stockholm, Kungsholm, [1890]. 8vo, pp. 100; ownership stamp to the front cover; leaves lightly browned throughout, but still a good copy, uncut in the original printed wrappers, edges a little soiled. Scarce first edition of Wicksell’s polemic on sexual problems, published during the ‘wilderness’ years before he decided to devote his time to science and economics. ‘When Knut Wicksell [1851–1926] returned from his travels, a married man of nearly forty and soon to become a father, he had a reputation for headstrong reforming zeal, but no standing or any kind of settled livelihood … In the autumn of 1890 the family moved into a two-roomed flat on Engelbrektsgatan in Stockholm and Knut Wicksell began to look around for some means of support. He visited the firms which had distributed his most recent pamphlets, but they could give him little encouragement. Any profit they made on … The Sexual Problems would apparently be needed to cover the loss on Aunt Malin[’s New Tales from Biblical History for Older Children (1888)]; all he received was a vague promise of 200 crowns later in the autumn.
