Small 8vo, pp. x, [11]–56, [8] publisher’s advertisements; a few lightspots to the half-title; a good copy, uncut in the original illustrated boards, soiled and a little rubbed. First edition in English of Le socialisme dévoilé (1849), translated and published in London as ‘it must not be forgotten, that at the present moment several of the most able, and therefore most dangerous, apostles of this pernicious doctrine are fugitives in England; and it is, moreover, well known that great efforts are now being made to propagate the baneful opinions of Socialism, not only in France, but also in Great Britain’ (preface). The illustration on the upper board depicts a man tearing his clothes and distributing them in bits among the crowd, under a poster which reads ‘Socialism Unmasked’. The caption reads: ‘The OBJECT of Socialism is to make of that which is useful to ONE, useless to ALL’.Born in Choisy and educated in Paris, Gouraud (b.1823) wrote a number of other political works, two novels, and the comedy, Ludovic (1865).Rare: OCLC locates three copies only (National Library of Wales, University of Maryland, New York Public Library).
