London, William Bulmer & Co. for John White, 1805. 4to, pp. [iv], xvi, [iv], 145 (final page mis-numbered ‘149’), with an aquatint frontispiece and a plate (both offset onto facing page); a good copy, uncut and partly unopened in the original boards, paper spine (worn); the King of Hanover’s copy (according to a pencil note on front pastedown); the Blackmer copy, with bookplate. First edition. ‘In 1799 Carlyle was appointed chaplain to Lord Elgin’s mission to Constantinople, with the special duties of learned referee; and he made a tour through Asia Minor, Palestine, Greece, and Italy, collecting Greek and Syriac manuscripts for a proposed new version of the New Testament, which unfortunately he did not live to accomplish. After returning to England in September 1801 he was presented to the living of Newcastle upon Tyne; but his health had been seriously impaired by the fatigues of travel. He died after an illness on 12 April 1804. His Poems . . ., together with some translations from the Arabic, were published posthumously in 1805, as well as extracts from his journal and a preface by his sister’ (Oxford DNB). The plates depict the Simois and the Scamander, the two principal rivers of the Troad.Blackmer 288.
