CONDER, Claude Reignier.

Syrian Stone-lore; or, the monumental history of Palestine . . . Published for the committee of the Palestine Exploration Fund.

London, Richard Bentley & Son, 1886. 8vo, pp. xiv, 472, [1, advertisement], with three plates and three folding maps; numerous illustrations in text; one opening (pp. 152–3) slightly soiled, but a good copy in the original dark blue cloth; minor wear, slightly marked. First edition. ‘Conder presents here the historical and archaeological conclusions drawn from his topographical work in Palestine, arranged chronologically from the period of the Canaanites to the Arab conquest and the Crusaders. He discusses numismatic, linguistic, architectural and other evidence. This work also contains a short-title biography’ (Blackmer). ‘The limits of the country under consideration are the peninsula of Sinai on the south, and the Taurus Chain on the north, the Mediterranean on the west, and the desert on the east . . . and it is intended in these pages to show not only what can be gathered from the antiquities of Syria itself concerning its ancient condition, but also how much light can now be obtained for the same purpose from the monumental remains of surrounding nations’ (preface).Blackmer 391 records the second edition.
