SECHENOV, Ivan Mikhaylovich.

Fisiologia nervnoi sistemy [in Cyrillic].

St. Petersburg, 1866. 8vo, pp. [2], vi, [2], 503, xii, with a few illustrations in the text; lacking a blank before the start of the second section, tear in one leaf repaired without loss of text; contemporary sheep backed cloth. FIRST EDITION, rare, of Sechenov's influential lectures at the St. Petersburg Medico-Surgical Academy. Sechenov states in his preface that as soon as he began to lecture (St. Petersburg in 1860 was his first professorship) he discovered the deficiencies of the existing textbooks, which tended to be purely anatomical in their approach, and not at all physiological. Sechenov's ideas, as set forth in his Reflexes of the Brain, were popular among the Russian intelligensia, though abhorred by the Government, but it was through these lectures that they were disseminated amongst university students, whose development of his teaching earned Sechenov the title of "the father of Russian physiology."Not in NUC.
