Stuttgart, Carl Grüninger, 1868. 8vo, pp. xvi, 224, [2 leaves of advertisement], with one engraved portrait, one photographic plate, 2 leaves of facsimile letters, hand-coloured illustration with the arms of Kepler's family, and several woodcut illustrations in the text; a few leaves a little spotted; a fine copy in contemporary blue boards, faded; calligraphic dedication inscription from the editor Gruner to Dr. von der Gabelentz, honorary member of the Kepler memorial committee, on extra leaf. FIRST EDITION of the first part of a projected grand Kepler biography: 'further parts of this finely produced and much cited biography were not published. The reason appears to be Gruner's pretentious attitude, which led Reitlinger to withdraw from the editorship. As the overall design and concept, however, stems from Reitlinger, his name should be mentioned in the first place' (translated from Caspar). At the end there are two leaves of advertisement, including one for Frisch's famous collected edition of Kepler's works.Caspar p. 138 no. 73.
