Traduction [by Jean Baptiste GARDEIL] des Oeuvres Médicales d'Hippocrate, sur le texte Grec, d'après l'édition de Foës. Tome premier [-quatrième].

Toulouse, Fages, Meilhac, and Co., 1801. Four volumes, 8vo, pp. [2], xxviii, 450, [2]; 528; 438, [2]; 556, [2]; vol. IV without the half-title; a very good set in early nineteenth-century mottled calf, spines gilt, contrasting lettering pieces. FIRST EDITION OF GARDEIL'S TRANSLATION, the third translation of Hippocrates into French. Hippocrates has not often appeared complete in modern languages. The earliest editions were in French (Tardy's translation of 1667, and Dacier's of 1697). There were two German translations before the end of the eighteenth century. An English translation was not to appear before 1846. Gardeil was a native of Toulouse, where he received a good education. Refusing to take holy orders, he went to Paris and befriended the philosophes. Later he returned to Toulouse to teach mathematics and medicine. His translation of Hippocrates was ready on the eve of the Revolution but its publication was delayed.Bruni Celli 1685; this edition not in Wellcome.
