RULAND, Martin, the elder.

Curationum empyricarum et historicarum, in certis locis et notis personis optime expertarum, et rite probatarum, centuriae decem. Quibus adiuncta de nouo eiusdem authoris medica practica.

Lyons, Pierre Ravaud, 1628. Three parts in one vol., small 8vo, pp [viii], 794, [xiii]; 165, with woodcut printer's device on titles of each part; tear in one leaf crudely repaired, minor damp-stain, occasional browning or spotting; contemporary calf, spine gilt; worn, but sound; signature on title of Claude Theodore de l'Espinasse, recording the purchase of the book in Paris in 1663, nineteenth-century Antwerp library stamp on title. FIRST EDITION of the complete Centuriae decem. The first Centuria was published in Basle in 1581, and others followed until the eighth and ninth were published together in 1595. This complete collection was published sixteen years after the author's death. The epilogue of the Centuria decima was written in the 63rd year of the author's life (1595), but this Centuria does not appear to have been published until the present edition. Also in 1628 there was published in Basle an edition of the Centuriae decem, classified by disease, Thesaurus Rulandinus. In the present edition the original format is followed, that is, a miscellany of case-histories; but there is a copious index. Also included are treatises on phlebotomy and scarification, a discourse on the origin of the soul, and a tract on dosages: all these had been published before. Martin Ruland the elder (1596-1602) was, in the last years of his life, physician to Emperor Rudolph II. 'He favoured Paracelsian reforms and the use of chemically prepared medicines' (DSB, in the entry for Martin Ruland the younger, the author of the Lexicon alchimiae, 1612).Krivatsy 10028; no copy besides NLM recorded in NUC; not in Wellcome.
