First edition in German of Brown's epoch-making A Brief Account of Microscopical Observations ... on the particles contained in the pollen of plants, the paper in which 'Brownian Movement' is first described. The paper was first privately printed in English at the end of July, 1828, and was rapidly taken up by the scientific journals. The supplementary paper, Additional Remarks on Active Molecules, which appeared in the Philosophical Magazine in September 1829, importantly eliminates such explanations as fluid currents and evaporation, and essentially rules out all but the actual cause, i.e. molecular agitation, which it falls short of naming. The paper also records the observation of independence, which later became the defining characteristic of Brownian Movement, that is, the trajectory of each particle is independent of those of its neighbours.For the first, privately printed, edition of Brown's paper see Dibner 156 and PMM 290.
