MENDELEEV, Dmitryi Ivanovich.

Das spezifische Gewicht der Schwefelsäure-Lösungen.

Leipzig, W. Engelmann, 1887. 8vo, pp. [273-] 284; a very good copy with the original upper cover; upper cover with the cropped inscription: 'a M le professeur Marignac hommage respect[ueux] ... de l'auteur.' FIRST EDITION of this paper on the specific weight of sulfuric solutions. This is a rare offprint from the Zeitschrift für physikalische Chemie, with a dedication inscription to Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac, discoverer of ytterbium.Following the discovery of the periodic law in 1869, Mendeleev, in 1884, 'concerned himself with the expansion of liquids and in particular with the specific weights of aqueous solutions of various substances. He was able to conclude that in such solutions discontinuous relationships exist between the solvent and the solute, attesting to the existence of determinate chemical relationships - a necessary condition, according to chemical atomic theory. Mendeleev thus arrived at a chemical theory of solutions, which he opposed to the theory of electrolytic dissociation of dilute aqueous solutions set forth by Arrhenius' (DSB IX p. 291).The dedication to Marignac is of significance, as Mendeleev here confirms some of the Swiss chemist's findings. See Partington IV p. 875.
