FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, an attractive copy, of four mémoires read at the Institut National between 1804 and 1809 on the use of the barometre for determining altitude, and applications in geography and meteorology. The mémoires were revised and corrected for this edition, and the author added an Instruction élementaire et pratique.Ramond ('un savant distingué et un écrivain remarquable' - Biographie universelle) had established the ratio between temperature, altitude and air pressure. Based on Laplace's propositions in his Exposition du système du monde, Ramond's finding had been published in book X of Laplace's Mechanique Céleste (vol IV, pp. 289-93). Ramond was the first to apply this method for determining the altitude on a large scale during his scientific voyages in the Pyrennees, and in the mountains around Clermont-Ferrand. The aim of the book is to give guidelines for the conditions of exact barometric measurements and calculations, excluding errors, and giving examples for the application of Ramond's coefficient. This new method was immediately employed by Humbold, Biot, and Arago.Crawford, 376; Struve p. 203.
