BRUNFELS, Otto.
Theses seu communes loci, totius rei medicae. Item. De usu pharmacorum, deque artificio suppressam alvum ciendi, liber. [Edited by Johannes Munterus].
Strasbourg, Gregorius Ulricher, 1532. Small 8vo, ff. [x], 232, with woodcut printer's device on title and on verso of last leaf; the early leaves water-stained at upper outer corners; minor marginal flaws to first and last leaf (without loss); otherwise a good copy in contemporary blind-stamped pigskin, a little warped; ownership inscriptions on both paste-downs of Georgius Paulinus Holucha, dated 1616, several inked out early inscriptions on title. FIRST EDITION of one of Brunfels' scarcer works, 'a treatise on the pharmacological approach to a wide variety of diseases. Included with it are Alessandro Benedetti's Sententiae medicinales [ff. 118-37] and Arnald of Villanova's Sententiarum medicinalium [ff. 138-82]' (Heirs of Hippocrates). The book is an ordered digest of the aphorisms and maxims of the best authors (to paraphrase Brunfels), including Hippocrates, Soranus of Ephesus, Celsus, Rhazes, and Serapion.Brunfels entered the Carthusian monastery in Strasbourg after graduating MA in 1508: in 1521 he left the monastery and the Catholic faith. He opened a school in Strasbourg in 1524 and 'soon demonstrated his interest in medicine by editing and translating various older medical texts and by writing one of the earliest medical bibliographies, the Catalogus, (1530)' (DSB). His famous Herbarum vivae eicones appeared in 1530 and 1532: in the latter year he graduated MD at Basle. Brunfels' 'nonbotanical work was principally in medicine and pharmacology ... [He was] industrious in compiling practical texts designed for the use of physicians and apothecaries, which contained prescriptions and related pharmacological matter and were usually well indexed for ready reference' (ibid).Adams B 2931; Durling, First Supplement, 29; Heirs of Hippocrates 193; IA 125.654; Neu 752; Ritter 293; Wellcome 1105; to these locations NUC adds New York Academy of Medicine and Yale; OCLC adds UCLA and Dartmouth College.
