Large 4to (305 x 245 mm), pp. [iv], 28, [1, list of subscribers], with 19 plates, one coloured; illustrations and a coloured map in the text; some light foxing and soiling, some inner margins and fore-edge of one page reinforced; later buckram; the Hosken copy, with bookplate. First edition. 96 individuals are recorded in the list of subscribers. ‘The following work pretends to nothing more than a collection of incidents and facts, familiar to every voyager, together with a very general and summary description, as well as of the scientific portions of the book, as of the different places which are either only “sighted” or “touched at” on the journey’ (introductory chapter). ‘In addition to the illustrations of the various places of interest on the voyage to India via the Cape, there is an introductory chapter with much information as to the trip. There are also full descriptions of the views, and an interesting chapter on Cape Town’ (Mendelssohn I p. 39). The fine plates include views of Tristan da Cunha, Mauritius, Ceylon, Madras, Calcutta, Bombay, Table Bay and St Helena. OCLC gives Charles Richard Francis as the author.Hosken p. 5; SAB IV p. 510.
