DU CHAILLU, Paul Belloni.

A journey to Ashango-land: and further penetration into Equatorial Africa.

London, John Murray, 1867. 8vo (230 x 145 mm), pp. xxiv, 501, [1], 32 (advertisements), with 19 plates and a folding map; title-page vignette; three full-page illustrations in the text; original purple cloth, gilt vignette on upper cover; extremities rubbed, tiny nicks in cloth at joints, spine sunned; the Hosken copy, with bookplate. First edition. The account of Du Chaillu’s second African expedition. ‘In 1863 Du Chaillu returned to Gabon, did a little trading, assembled a caravan well equipped with scientific instruments and cameras, and hired seventy porters and a few guides. He met with Massangou people (in what he called Ashango) 200 miles southeast of the Gabon River and visited a pygmy settlement nearby. When one of his men accidentally shot two Massangous, his party was forced to abandon many supplies and flee for their lives. He was wounded by two poisoned arrows. Fortunately, he saved his extensive notebooks. Back in England in 1865, Du Chaillu lectured more successfully and prepared A journey to Ashango-Land . . . for publication in 1867. Many readers disputed his sensational descriptions of pygmies until later explorers asserted that they were substantially accurate’ (ANB).Hosken p. 63.
